“It’s easy to think it’s about them, about him or her, but it’s about you. And me. Connecting. Right now, in this conversation. Not that one. This one.” — Susan Scott
Psycho-therapy is a treatment designed specifically for mental health needs.“Treatment” of mental health issues is complex and needs personalised care in the form of medication and psycho-therapy. The psycho-therapist helps the client by curating a safe-non-judgemental environment, where clients can reflect, learn to process their difficult feelings and thoughts or gain helpful strategies to help themselves in the world out there. It is a space to heal, grow and be themselves. In the end the objective is to increase wellbeing and lead a higher quality of life.
Yes ofcourse! Whenever you feel like it. It is however, preferred you at least take 3-4 sessions before deciding to leave or switch therapists. This is because the initial sessions are spent on analysing client’s therapeutic needs and to build a relationship between the client and the therapist.
Usually, the guidelines I follow when a client misses the session are as follows:
Frequency of the sessions depend on individual needs of the clients. Usually in the beginning I ask my clients to have 1 session every week and once they gain more confidence they can reduce the frequency.
The length of 1 therapeutic session with me is 50 minutes. This length is carefully curated so that clients have enough time and space to dive deeper but also feel a certain pull to explore rather than remain surface level. In my experience changing this length only impedes the therapeutic process and does not have any therapeutic value.
First sessions look different for everyone. You can expect to have space to take things at your own pace, feeling seen and safe. Usually first sessions is about the therapist getting to know you and your needs.
Experiencing overwhelm before starting therapy is quite normal, therapy is a powerful and intense tool and some stress and overwhelm is definitely warranted :). Usually I address these feelings head-on if they are present and try to make the therapy space as comfortable as possible for my clients.
This again depends on the circumstances of the client, some people start noticing changes after four sessions. We offer a package of 12 sessions over the span of 3 months which is usually enough for clients with basic therapeutic needs to start seeing changes in their lives. In addition, clients can apply for one-off sessions depending on their needs and circumstances.
Acute MH conditions occur due to a sudden spike in stress due to loss, trauma, accident etc. Chronic MH conditions usually span for years, or even since childhood (like in the cases of generational trauma). Depending on these, different therapeutic approaches are beneficial. Usually, the former can benefit from short-term therapy since in these individuals, Mental health foundations like self-esteem, connection with body etc., are strong. In the case of chronic Mental health conditions, long term therapeutic work is needed. In acute cases the therapist usually works on helping the body feel safe again by using breathing techniques and by helping the client process the event fully, creating more awareness and understanding. In case of clients with chronic MH conditions, childhood stressful events and trauma are discussed and processed, exploration of self-identity, needs and wants is initiated to build an integrated sense of self, in addition the client learns emotional regulation strategies to help themselves feel safer outside of the session leading to better expression of self and independence.
Living with a MH condition is like wearing black-tinted goggles and not knowing it, it changes your worldview, perception of people, past, present and future, thus it shapes your reality, the way you think and behave. With therapy you learn to become aware of these goggles and take them out when you do not need them
Your body has kept every score. Meaning all the emotions and feelings that have not been processed has been stored within the body. Chronic stress gives rise to cervical and bladder issues. Low self-esteem can lead to posture changes and hunched back. Being exposed to long-term trauma and fear can change our nervous system into always being in flight-or fight mode. Thus even if you are self-aware and knowwhat is wrong, your body does not (if your body is in a state of fear, you will only have negative thoughts which will lead to more fear creating a cycle). Therapies like Somatic therapy and MBCT is especially helpful to release pent up trauma and heal body leading to reversing this cycle and leading to long-term changes.
